In an attempt to shift public perspective, the Liberian Senate Committee Chair on Ways, Means, and Finance has stepped forward to address mounting controversy surrounding the disbursement of over $500,000 purportedly allocated for a Senate retreat in Buchanan.
Senator Prince Moyre, speaking at a press conference, vehemently disputed reports claiming a budget of $175,000 for the retreat, clarifying that the actual allocated amount was significantly lower at $47,000.
“In various reports, the figure of $175,000 mentioned is from a retracted budget proposal,” Senator Moyre emphasized, aiming to correct misinformation circulating in the media.
Out of the budgeted $47,000, Senator Moyre disclosed that only $42,000 was spent on essential expenses such as accommodations, meals, facilitation, and other logistical necessities for the retreat.
He emphasized that every expenditure was meticulously managed to ensure adherence to the allocated budget and the success of the event.
Furthermore, the Senator clarified that the original $175,000 budget proposal encompassed not only the retreat but also funds earmarked for constituent visits and related activities, which were misinterpreted in media reports.
Senator Moyre’s detailed explanation seeks to address public concerns and reaffirm transparency in the Senate’s financial operations, especially amidst heightened scrutiny of governmental spending.
However, the Senator’s clarification has not assuaged public discontent, particularly in light of statements from his colleague, Senator Amara Konneh, who publicly acknowledged a disbursement exceeding $500,000.
Senator Konneh later announced that excess funds were promptly returned to the Central Bank of Liberia, emphasizing his commitment to upholding integrity and ensuring financial accountability.
The controversy has cast a shadow over the Liberian Senate, triggering widespread scrutiny since reports surfaced of allocating over $500,000 for what was officially described as a four-day retreat, but which actually lasted only three days.
