Liberian grassroots female developmental basketball coach Angel R. Buckle has been certificated by FIBA Africa Zone-3 after completing required training in Madagascar.
She received her certification on Thursday, July 18, alongside several other coaches from various member countries.
This initiative is part of the Federation of International Basketball Association (FIBA)’s quest to rebrand the game in Africa by training more grassroots coaches.
Following the resolution of a prolonged dispute that had stalled progress in Liberian basketball for nearly four years, FIBA Africa Zone-3 reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with the new administration under Abraham Samukai.
Since Samukai’s ascension as President of the Liberia Basketball Association (LBA), FIBA has provided technical support, restoring ties with the local body.
In a significant development, Liberia has been granted the responsibility to host the Zone-3 Women’s qualifiers later this year.
Additionally, the best-performing clubs at the end of each League Season will begin participating in international competitions after several years of restriction due to a ban.
These positive changes are unfolding under Samukai’s leadership.
For the first time in nearly 15 years, Liberia will participate in an international competition.
The under-18 male and female teams are set to compete in the 2024 Junior Championship in Ivory Coast from July 29 to August 5.
LBA President Samukai expressed his determination to steer basketball in a positive direction in Liberia. “Despite the challenges, we are committed to ensuring that basketball flourishes in our country,” he stated.
