Vice President Jeremiah K. Koung called on African youth to embrace their role as future leaders and catalysts for change across the continent.
Speaking at the opening session of the Young Political Leadership School Africa (YPLSA) Cohort 11 organized by NAYMOTE Partners for Democratic Development, Vice President Koung emphasized the need for young people to actively participate in politics, governance, and the democratic processes that will shape Africa’s future.
Opening his speech, Vice President Koung humorously acknowledged the audience’s expectation of the President’s presence, but quickly turned to praise NAYMOTE for organizing such a unique program.
He recognized the significance of empowering young leaders across Africa, noting that the continent’s youthful population—nearly 1.8 billion under the age of 25—represents both a demographic advantage and a responsibility to ensure Africa’s development.
“The youth are the driving force behind Africa’s future,” he said, underscoring the importance of leadership development and a sense of responsibility among the younger generation.
He acknowledged the challenges that have plagued Africa, from the struggles of previous generations for independence to the ongoing need for sustainable leadership and good governance.
Vice President Koung addressed the theme of the event, “Empower the Future: African Youth Leaders for Sustainable Development, Peace, and Security,” highlighting the vital role that young people must play in these areas.
He urged participants of Cohort 11 of the Young Political Leadership School Africa (YPLSA) to be active participants in decision-making processes, stating, “Our youth must be included at the decision-making table, offering ideas on governance, development, accountability, peace, and security.”
He also spoke candidly about the struggles many African youth face, including those who have lost hope in the continent’s future and those who seek better opportunities abroad, often risking their lives.
VP Koung attributed these issues to prolonged failures in sustainable leadership across the continent.
“While governments must create an enabling environment for all to thrive, it is also essential that our youth have the courage to devise solutions to the challenges we face,” he stated.
He called on young people to be proactive in shaping their future, urging them to seize the opportunities before them to become competitive on the global stage.
Reflecting on his own life journey, Vice President Koung shared a personal story of overcoming adversity, growing up in challenging circumstances, and rising to his current position. His message to the youth was clear: despite the odds, they too can achieve greatness.
In closing, Koung declared the establishment of a new African youth political forum, signaling his commitment to fostering youth leadership across the continent. He expressed hope for the future and congratulated the young participants for taking the initiative to engage in this important work.
“History will remember you for preserving our continent,” he concluded. “I urge you all to seize this opportunity, position yourselves for leadership, and work towards the betterment of Africa.”
