US Vows Security Support to Liberia, Donates Assorted Items to LNP

In a significant gesture of support, US Ambassador Mark Toner addressed a gathering of the Liberia National Police (LNP) today, emphasizing the importance of the rule of law in the nation’s growth.

“The enforcement of the rule of law primarily rests on the shoulders of you, the LNP, men and women in blue,” he stated, highlighting America’s enduring partnership with Liberia since 2003.

Toner acknowledged the LNP’s pivotal role in ensuring free and fair elections and praised their commitment to rebuilding trust within communities.

He reaffirmed the United States’ dedication to supporting the LNP and Liberia’s security sector, stressing the need for ongoing commitment to diversity and community-oriented policing.

The US Ambassador made these remarks on Thursday, September 26, 2024, at the LNP headquarters during a program marking the donation of assorted office items to the police to boost their operational strength.

For his part, the Vice President of Liberia, Jeremiah Koung, recounted the lasting relationship between Liberia and the United States government dating back to former US President George Bush.

VP Koung extolled the US government, through its embassy in Monrovia, for their support to Liberia through peacekeeping missions, security reforms, and logistical assistance to law enforcement institutions, including the Liberia Drugs Enforcement Agency (LDEA).

Vice President Koung highlighted President Boakai’s administration commitment to the fight against drugs by declaring it a pandemic.

He, however, pledged his administration’s commitment to a lasting relationship with the US government to foster bilateral trade and development.

The Liberian Vice President urged the authorities of the LNP to use the assorted office equipment effectively and efficiently, while stressing the need for total oversight and accountability.

Receiving the items on behalf of the Liberia National Police, Police Inspector General Gregory Coleman expressed gratitude for the US government’s continuous support to law enforcement institutions in Liberia.

IG Coleman highlighted the LNP’s commitment to ensuring the delivery of police services to sustain peace and enable economic development to thrive on the basis of respect for the rule of law.

“We commit to ensuring the delivery of services to sustain peace and ensure economic development thrives on the basis of respect for the rule of law,” Coleman asserted.

He emphasized the LNP’s focus on human security and community engagement, acknowledging the roots of civil disturbances and crime.
Coleman concluded by assuring that the donated items would be used effectively, pledging transparency and accountability on behalf of the LNP and the government of Liberia.

The worth of the assorted items is valued at over US$ 59,000.

Six months ago, the US government, through their embassy in Monrovia, donated over six hundred sets of uniforms to the LNP to enhance their smooth operations.
