President Boakai, Former President Sirleaf Lobby Global Support For UN Security Council Bid

President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. alongside former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, called on the international community to support Liberia’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2026-2027 term.

Speaking at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Wednesday, September 25, President Boakai emphasized Liberia’s historical role as a founding member of the United Nations and its deep commitment to peace, security, and human dignity. There, he also announced Liberia’s bid for a non permanent seat on the UN Security Council.

Former President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, joined him in advocating for Liberia’s position on the global stage.

“Liberia’s history is closely intertwined with the ideals of the United Nations,” President Boakai stated. “Our legacy in promoting peace, resolving conflicts, and championing self-determination in Africa speaks volumes about our readiness to take on this role.”

Former President Sirleaf echoed his sentiments, emphasizing that Liberia’s journey from conflict to peace has made the country uniquely qualified to contribute to the Security Council’s mandate.

The duo highlighted Liberia’s active role in founding key regional organizations such as the African Union (AU), the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and the Mano River Union (MRU), all of which have been vital to advancing peace and cooperation in Africa.

President Boakai stressed the nation’s priorities, including addressing climate change, enhancing regional security, and promoting sustainable development, all of which align with the UN’s goals. He also reaffirmed Liberia’s dedication to multilateralism and inclusive global decision making.

“As a member of the Security Council, Liberia will bring a perspective shaped by our history and a deep commitment to the values enshrined in the UN Charter,” President Boakai affirmed.

In his closing remarks, President Boakai, with the support of Sirleaf, respectfully solicited the backing of UN member states for Liberia’s candidacy, emphasizing the nation’s readiness to contribute to the global peace agenda.
