Capital Link Cement Company and AFCONS Under Pressure Over Bad Labor Practices

As part of its nationwide tour to promote a working environment that adheres to good labor practices, the Minister of Labor has targeted Capital Link Cement Company in Grand Bassa, mandating the institution to reinstate one of its employees who was wrongfully dismissed.

The Labor Minister, Cllr. Cooper W. Kruah, believes that the decision taken by the company was illegal and contrary to the labor laws of Liberia.

The management of Capital Link Cement Company in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, is required to implement several measures, including the immediate reinstatement of an employee, Amos Tommy, who was illegally dismissed.

According to a Labor Ministry press release, Minister Kruah also called on the management of Capital Link to provide a transportation program for its employees to convey them to and from work in order to ensure conducive working conditions at the company.

The release further quotes Minister Kruah as directing the company management to extend the current contractual agreements with employees from one month to at least three to six months, with all associated benefits.

These stringent administrative actions were taken over the weekend at the Capital Link Cement Company compound on the outskirts of Buchanan City while Minister Kruah was carrying out the second leg of his ongoing nationwide tour of labor assessments.

He cautioned the company to create a harmonious working environment that would motivate employees and enhance productivity.

In response, Capital Link Cement Company Chief Operating Manager, Jihad Mourad, assured Minister Kruah and his delegation of the company’s full compliance with all mandates issued by the Labor Minister and promised to improve working conditions and employee relations.

For their part, the more than 40 employees at Capital Link Cement Company expressed gratitude to Minister Kruah for his swift intervention in alleviating the problems they were facing.

Earlier, the Labor Minister and his team visited AFCONS and urged the management to consider hiring more Liberians to perform delicate labor services as a means of reducing the current workload on a few workers, particularly in the maintenance department.

Labor Minister Kruah also stressed the need for improving the status of long-term staff who have attained professional levels.

Meanwhile, Labor Minister Kruah is expected to visit ArcelorMittal facilities and other concession areas in Grand Bassa County as part of his ongoing nationwide labor assessment tour.
