The House of Representatives has officially denied rumors circulating on social media regarding the recall or resubmission of the Draft 2025 National Budget by the Executive Branch.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, Robert Haynes, Director of Communications for the 55th Legislature, clarified that the Budget, initially submitted by the Executive through the Ministry of Finance on November 18, 2024, remains under committee review. He emphasized that the Executive has taken no formal action to withdraw or amend the document.
The statement addressed growing speculation that the budget process had been disrupted. Haynes states, “The 2025 Draft National Budget was duly received by the plenary and sent to committee for analysis. Claims of its recall or alteration are baseless.”
However, the House expressed alarm over reports that former Speaker, Representative J. Fonati Koffa, allegedly removed copies of the Budget from the Chief Clerk’s office under a heavy security escort. This unexpected development has raised questions about the integrity of the legislative process and prompted outrage within the Legislature.
“The actions of Rep. Koffa are highly concerning and undermine the transparency of the budget review process,” the statement read.
The House condemned the incident, describing it as a breach of protocol that threatens the principles of accountability and due process. “The 55th Legislature condemns these actions in the strongest terms and reassures the public that investigations are underway to address this serious matter,” Haynes added.
In response to public concerns, the House reiterated its commitment to transparency and accountability in reviewing the national Budget. Lawmakers assured citizens that the process would continue in accordance with the law, and any disruptions will be thoroughly investigated and addressed.
The statement further affirmed that the House remains steadfast in fulfilling its constitutional responsibilities. “We are dedicated to serving the Liberian people with integrity and ensuring that the budget process is conducted lawfully and transparently,” it concluded.
In a separate development, members of the House of Representatives visited the family of the late Nimba County Senator, Hon. Prince Y. Johnson, to express their condolences and provide support during this time of mourning.
The lawmakers conveyed their heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family and pledged to honor the legacy of Senator Johnson, who was a prominent figure in Liberian politics.
