LEGISPOOL Expresses Concern Over Threat to Peace Amid HOR Impasse

Capitol Hill, Monrovia – The leadership of the Legislative Press Pool (LEGISPOOL), led by President Gerald C. Koinyeneh, has expressed grave concern over the conduct of members of the House of Representatives, warning that their recent actions pose a significant threat to Liberia’s peace and stability.

In a statement, LEGISPOOL noted that the legislative drama, which has unfolded since October following a resolution by 47 members of the House to oust Speaker J. Fonati Koffa, has degenerated into heated controversies and heightened tensions. Speaker Koffa was accused of several offenses, including conflict of interest and interference with committee work.

Despite Speaker Koffa’s denials, the situation escalated, prompting both factions to seek intervention from the Supreme Court. In the interim, the “Majority Bloc” elected Representative Richard Nagbe Koon as Speaker, deepening the political and legal impasse.

LEGISPOOL highlighted that many Liberians had hoped for calm following the Supreme Court’s ruling last weekend. However, the decision has instead fueled divergent interpretations from both factions, sparking mixed reactions among political and legal observers.

A Call for Leadership and Responsibility

The press body decried threatening statements made by lawmakers on both sides, warning that such rhetoric could destabilize the nation. “We hold the strongest belief that lawmakers must always respect the laws they make. Their actions should exemplify leadership, not conflict,” the statement read.

LEGISPOOL lamented the lack of political maturity and decorum, urging members of the House to resolve their differences within the framework of the law. “The actions and inflammatory remarks of some lawmakers are counterproductive to Liberia’s hard-won peace,” the group stated, reminding lawmakers of the sacrifices made by Liberians and the international community to maintain stability in the country.

International and Domestic Engagement Urged

The press organization acknowledged the unsuccessful mediation efforts of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and called for renewed efforts by the international community, civil society organizations, and concerned citizens to engage with the conflicting parties constructively.

“We believe this crisis can only be resolved if the parties involved prioritize the supreme interests of the Liberian people, respect the rule of law, and uphold the Constitution,” LEGISPOOL emphasized.

Maintaining Professionalism

The leadership of LEGISPOOL also urged its members to maintain neutrality and adhere to journalistic ethics. “Unethical or biased reporting has the potential to escalate the crisis further. We caution all journalists covering the legislature to act responsibly and professionally,” the statement added.

Security Concerns and Appeal for Calm

LEGISPOOL raised alarms over recent violence at the Capitol Building, allegedly involving political thugs and legislative staff, calling for an immediate end to such incidents. It also appealed to the Liberia National Police and other security agencies to act professionally and ensure the safety of citizens, including reporters, legislators, and staff.

The press body concluded by urging all parties to prioritize peace and stability, expressing optimism that sustained dialogue and respect for the rule of law would eventually resolve the impasse.
