U.S. Embassy Urges Compromise in House Impasse

The United States Embassy in Monrovia has called on the opposing blocs in Liberia’s House of Representatives (the Majority and Pro-Koffa factions) to resolve their differences amicably and prioritize the nation’s democratic values.

In a statement issued today, the Embassy reaffirmed its commitment to monitoring Liberia’s political developments and emphasized the importance of peaceful political processes grounded in respect for the rule of law.

“Liberians expect their leaders to uphold democracy and its practices, including open and transparent political processes and peaceful debate,” the Embassy stated.

The U.S. urged all parties to exercise restraint, maintain peace, and foster unity during the ongoing political dispute. It underscored that violence has no place in a democratic society and benefits no one.

“We strongly urge both sides to reach a compromise so that the important work of the legislature can continue for the benefit of the Liberian people,” the statement read.

The Embassy acknowledged the challenges inherent in maintaining a democracy but encouraged leaders to draw lessons from difficult times, remain steadfast, and refrain from actions that could lead to instability.

“Maintaining a democracy is never easy, and there will certainly be tough times. However, the key is learning from missteps and committing to peaceful engagement. There is no place or benefit in resorting to violence,” the statement emphasized.

The Embassy expressed confidence that Liberia’s political leaders, despite their differences, have the capacity to address their issues through direct and constructive dialogue for the greater good of the nation.
