Mildred Cole Foundation’s Inspiring Journey

In a nation where quality education is critical for growth and development, many Liberians are taking significant steps to improve the lives of future generations. Amid numerous challenges, individuals and organizations are rising to the occasion, often using personal resources to create opportunities for children who might otherwise be left behind.

One such inspiring initiative is the Mildred Cole Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded by the late Benjamin N. Tarr and his wife, Famatta Dunor Tarr. Established three years ago, the foundation provides education, food, clothing, and free medical care to underprivileged children, particularly those whose parents cannot afford these basic needs.

“We started this foundation three years ago to help children suffering from medical issues or those whose parents cannot send them to school,” said a foundation representative. “Beyond education, we also host Christmas parties, provide free giveaways, and offer meals during the festive season to children and families who cannot afford a decent celebration.”

Currently, the Mildred Cole Foundation supports 50 beneficiaries, giving them the chance to thrive despite their circumstances. Over the years, the foundation has also expanded its efforts to include vocational training programs, which have already graduated several students who are now better equipped to earn a living.

“We still have students enrolled in vocational schools, and we are always open to sponsorships, partnerships, and volunteers to help us reach more people who are eager to learn but lack the means to do so,” the foundation added.

The late Hon. Benjamin N. Tarr and Madam Famatta Dunor Tarr envisioned a society where every child, regardless of their background, could access the resources necessary for a brighter future. Their legacy lives on through the Mildred Cole Foundation, which addresses immediate needs and invests in long-term solutions by empowering children and young adults with education and skills.

As the foundation continues its mission, it faces the challenge of limited resources in meeting the growing demands of its beneficiaries. “We appeal to individuals, organizations, and philanthropists to support our cause. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of those eager to learn but lacking the opportunity,” said the representative.
