Amidst the tension and violence that marked the recent Capitol “lockdown” protest, an act of professionalism by the Liberia National Police (LNP) has garnered widespread praise.
During the protest, which saw clashes between law enforcement and demonstrators, one LNP officer was seen assisting an elderly female protester who had collapsed in the chaos. The officer and his colleagues escorted the woman to receive medical attention, demonstrating care and commitment to their duty. The public applauded this act, with the Green Revolution of Liberia, a prominent advocacy group, commending the LNP for their professionalism in handling the situation.
In a press release, the Green Revolution of Liberia acknowledged the officers’ conduct, describing it as exemplary. The group also accused the opposition Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) of instigating unrest during the protest. “The Green Revolution of Liberia commends the LNP for their professionalism in ensuring order. The opposition’s attempts to use financially induced protesters to breach the Capitol’s perimeter with criminal intent were successfully thwarted by well-coordinated riot control officers,” the statement read.
The group further alleged that the protest was part of a larger plot to destabilize the country’s leadership. “We appreciate the LNP’s efforts in maintaining peace and call on them to apprehend the key instigators, including Representative Yekeh Kolubah, Saah Foko, former Grand Bassa Superintendent Janjay Baikpeh, and former Speaker J. Fonati Koffa,” the release continued.
Additionally, the Green Revolution dismissed as “fictitious” the social media images claiming to show victims of police brutality, describing them as malicious propaganda. “These images, including one from the Ebola lockdown in West Point, are designed to mislead the public and overshadow the truth,” the statement alleged.
The group also congratulated Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon, the newly elected head of the 55th National Legislature, urging him to prioritize accountability and transparency. They called for a full audit of the House of Representatives. They demanded that the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) investigate former Speaker Koffa for alleged misappropriation of over $7 million from the national budget between 2022 and 2023.
Concluding the statement, the Green Revolution reaffirmed its dedication to preserving Liberia’s democracy and stability.
