Ghanaian National Arrested for Drug Trafficking in Cestos City

A 45-year-old Ghanaian national, identified as Benjamin Cobbinah, was arrested on Sunday, December 15, 2024, in Cestos City for his involvement in drug trafficking. The arrest was made by the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) as part of ongoing efforts to curb illegal drug activities in the country.

LDEA Commander George Kermukai confirmed the arrest, stating that Cobbinah was found in possession of 24 plates of compressed marijuana, commonly referred to as Ghanaian Compressed Marijuana. The seized drugs have an estimated street value of USD 4,800.

Cobbinah was apprehended in the Ghanaian community of Cestos City, an area with a notable expatriate population from Ghana. After his arrest, he was taken into custody and was subsequently forwarded to court for trial on Tuesday.

In a statement, Commander Kermukai emphasized that the LDEA’s operation is part of the broader initiative by President Joseph Boakai’s administration to eliminate drug-related activities in Liberia. “We are committed to fighting the illegal drug trade, and this arrest highlights the agency’s commitment to this mission,” Kermukai said.

Despite the evidence against him, Cobbinah denied involvement in smuggling the drugs. He claimed that he had been sent to collect a 10% alcoholic beverage but was instead handed the marijuana. Cobbinah also mentioned an individual named “J.J.” in connection to the seized drugs.

The LDEA has vowed to fully investigate Cobbinah’s case, as well as any individuals linked to the drug trafficking operation, and ensure they are prosecuted under Liberian law.
