On January 18, 2025, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. delivered a poignant eulogy for the late Senator Prince Yormie Johnson of Nimba County, acknowledging the challenges and triumphs that shaped his life.
In his tribute, Boakai expressed deep condolences to Senator Johnson’s widow, family, and Nimba County citizens, recognizing Johnson’s profound influence on Liberia’s political landscape.
The President spoke of Johnson as a figure whose influence was both complex and significant. “Senator Johnson’s life reflects the turbulent history that has shaped our nation,” Boakai stated. He emphasized that Johnson’s role in Liberia’s political evolution was impactful and would leave an indelible mark on the nation’s history.
Boakai recalled Johnson’s political skills and his unyielding commitment to his constituents. “He transcended regional divisions, becoming a symbol of leadership for the people of Nimba and Liberia at large,” Boakai remarked, noting that Johnson’s political acumen was central to his ability to unite and inspire.

Johnson’s call for establishing a war crimes court for Liberia stood out as one of his most lasting contributions to the nation. “Before his passing, Senator Johnson voiced his support for the establishment of a war crimes court, a critical step in Liberia’s quest for justice and healing,” said Boakai, underscoring the Senator’s commitment to ensuring accountability for the atrocities of Liberia’s civil war.
