HoR Calls on Health Minister and Chief Medical Officer

Monrovia, Liberia – The House of Representatives has issued a summons for the Minister of Health, Dr. Louise M. Kpoto, and the Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Catherine Thomas Cooper, to appear before the legislature on Tuesday. This call comes in response to growing national concerns about public healthcare services, which are being undermined by certain practices in the country’s health facilities. The decision was made during the House’s 5th day sitting of the 2nd quarter, following a formal communication from Hon. Isaac Bannie, the Representative from Grand Bassa County Electoral District 1.

In his communication, Hon. Bannie expressed his alarm over reports that public hospital authorities are requiring patients referred for specialized medical care to provide fuel and pay operation fees before they can receive treatment. He criticized this practice, noting that it runs counter to the objectives of the 2024 National Budget, which allocated funds specifically for the support of public health facilities and referral hospitals throughout Liberia. Hon. Bannie stressed that these actions undermine the purpose of these allocations, which were meant to ensure that healthcare services remain accessible to all citizens, regardless of their financial situation.

The lawmaker also raised concerns about the improper assignment of specialized medical professionals. He pointed to instances where trained doctors have been appointed as County Health Officers rather than serving in their respective areas of expertise. Specifically, he mentioned issues in Montserrado, Nimba, and Grand Cape Mount Counties, as well as the appointment of the current EPI Director at the Ministry of Health. Hon. Bannie warned that this misallocation could have serious consequences, particularly in emergency situations that require specialized medical attention, ultimately leading to a potential increase in mortality rates.

With these significant issues in mind, Hon. Bannie has called on the House of Representatives to summon the Minister of Health, Dr. Kpoto, and the Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Cooper, to provide detailed explanations and propose actionable solutions to address these critical healthcare challenges. He emphasized the need for an urgent response to safeguard the health of Liberians.

The House of Representatives is expected to engage in a detailed discussion with the summoned officials on Tuesday, aiming to ensure that healthcare services are efficiently and effectively delivered to all citizens, and that the public’s trust in the country’s healthcare system is restored.
