“A Dangerous Precedent,” Rep. Bility Warns Executive Branch

Nimba County District #7 Representative Musa Hassan Bility has raised serious concerns over the Executive Branch’s decision to align with the Majority Bloc in the House of Representatives, describing it as a threat to Liberia’s democracy.

In a strongly worded Facebook post, Bility condemned the Executive’s open support for an “illegal faction” of lawmakers seeking to unseat Speaker J. Fonati Koffa. He argued that this action defies a recent Supreme Court ruling and sets a dangerous precedent for Liberia’s governance.

“It sets a dangerous precedent when the Executive Branch openly disregards the court’s ruling and aligns with what is widely perceived as an illegal gathering of lawmakers,” Bility stated.

He specifically criticized the role of Justice Minister Oswald Tweh, who reportedly advised President Joseph Nyuma Boakai to endorse the Majority Bloc’s actions. According to Bility, this undermines judicial independence and raises questions about the Minister’s professional judgment.

Bility warned that the Executive’s actions jeopardize the separation of powers, a cornerstone of Liberia’s democracy, and risk plunging the nation into political instability.

“By ignoring the Supreme Court’s intervention, the Executive has opened the door to a chaotic and lawless political landscape,” Bility emphasized. “It sends a chilling message to Liberians and the international community: that political expediency can override constitutional order.”

He stressed that such moves erode public trust in democratic institutions and create uncertainty about the nation’s commitment to upholding the rule of law.

As Liberia faces this critical juncture, Bility called on all branches of government to uphold legal processes and protect the nation’s democratic principles. He reaffirmed his support for Speaker Koffa as the legitimate leader of the 55th Legislature and urged all Liberians to remain vigilant in defending democracy.

“This is a moment that demands courage and a steadfast commitment to justice,” Bility concluded, urging citizens to stand firm in safeguarding Liberia’s constitutional integrity.

The controversy highlights deepening divisions within the government, which is struggling to maintain political stability and adherence to democratic principles.
