A Path to Self-Reliance: 60 Adolescent Girls Begin TVET Training with Full Sponsorship from MKNK Foundation

Exiled Liberian activist Martin K. N. Kollie, through his philanthropic arm, the Martin K. N. Kollie Foundation (MKNK-F), has fully sponsored 60 adolescent girls to pursue technical and vocational education at the Atlantic Vocational Training Institute (AVTI).

In what he described as a “historic orientation ceremony” held on Friday, Kollie announced that the foundation is covering the full cost of tuition and practical training for the 60 young women, amounting to LRD 1.2 million (approximately US$6,000). The vocational programs include cosmetology, pastry making, interior decoration, catering, and other skills geared toward self-sufficiency.

“These girls showed incredible enthusiasm and eagerness to learn,” Kollie said. “It was thrilling to witness their readiness to be empowered. I encouraged them to remain focused and determined as they begin this life-changing journey.”

Kollie emphasized that his commitment to social activism goes beyond advocacy, focusing also on practical empowerment. “We cannot just criticize and keep talking about the problems. We must also find solutions,” he said. “This is what inspires us—to reach out and help lift up our community.”

The sponsorship initiative aligns with the foundation’s mission to foster a just and equitable society where every Liberian has access to opportunity and dignity. “It is not just enough to advocate and fight for the people; we must also empower them,” Kollie added.

Founded by Martin K. N. Kollie, a former student leader and fearless government critic currently living in exile, the MKNK Foundation focuses on youth empowerment, education, and social justice. This latest project represents a significant step towards equipping young Liberian women with the tools they need to thrive economically and socially.

The Atlantic Vocational Training Institute also extended thanks to the foundation for its support in impacting the lives of young Liberians through skills-based education.
