Monrovia – On December 16, 2024, 40 personnel from the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) completed the Basic Leader Course (BLC) at the Non-Commissioned Officers Academy, Camp Sandee Ware. The intensive nine-week training program, which began on October 14, culminated in a graduation ceremony on December 13, celebrating the soldiers’ readiness to assume more significant leadership roles.
The BLC is a foundational program that equips Non-Commissioned Officers with essential leadership skills, emphasizing discipline, professionalism, and responsibility. Among the graduating class were three exceptional female soldiers who distinguished themselves with outstanding performances during the course, demonstrating the increasing contributions of women in Liberia’s military leadership.
The course, organized by the Armed Forces Training Command (AFTC) under the supervision of Command Sergeant Major (CSM) Kuoh Plazian and 12 skilled instructors, is crucial in strengthening the AFL’s operational capabilities. The training ensures that junior personnel are prepared to meet the challenges of modern military service while fostering a culture of excellence and resilience.
Major Milton Gwyan, Training Officer of the Armed Forces Training Command, welcomed distinguished guests to the ceremony and highlighted the occasion’s significance. Speaking on behalf of the Commandant, Major Gwyan recognized the presence of Brigadier General Davidson Forleh, AFL Chief of Staff, commending his leadership and dedication to enhancing professionalism within the Armed Forces.
Special acknowledgment was also given to Senator Momo Cyrus of Lofa County, who served as the Guest of Honor. A strong advocate for defense, security, and veteran affairs, Senator Cyrus is known for his extensive diplomacy, leadership, and entrepreneurship expertise. His presence underscored the importance of military and civilian leadership collaboration in advancing Liberia’s National Security.
In his keynote address, Senator Cyrus inspired the graduates with a call to embrace adaptability, excellence, and responsibility as leaders. He emphasized that leadership transcends rank or title, focusing instead on the ability to inspire, make sound decisions under pressure, and foster unity in challenging times. “This moment marks not only a milestone for you but also for the Armed Forces of Liberia. Your success reflects a shared vision for a stronger, more capable military,” he remarked.
Senator Cyrus highlighted the vital role of the Armed Forces in nation-building, acknowledging their historical contributions to safeguarding Liberia’s sovereignty and participating in global peacekeeping missions. He expressed gratitude to the soldiers’ families and instructors, emphasizing their collective role in shaping the next generation of military leaders.
“The Basic Leader Course has prepared you to lead with integrity, courage, and commitment,” Senator Cyrus told the graduates. “You represent a new wave of leaders who will uphold our military’s legacy as a force for good, a defender of peace, and a source of national pride.”
The event concluded with congratulating the graduates and reaffirming the Armed Forces’ dedication to professional development. The ceremony celebrated the soldiers’ achievements and reinforced the AFL’s commitment to cultivating leaders capable of driving Liberia’s progress and ensuring national stability.
