Ghana’s former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged Nigeria’s political and economic elites to take on a greater leadership role in driving Africa’s unification and economic integration.
Speaking at the launch of A Journey in Service, former Nigerian Military President Ibrahim Babangida’s autobiography in Abuja on Thursday, Akufo-Addo acknowledged Nigeria’s internal challenges but stressed the country’s vital role in shaping the continent’s future.
“Nigeria has a pivotal role in driving Africa’s unification and economic integration,” Akufo-Addo stated, emphasizing that despite the country’s difficulties, its leadership remains critical to the continent’s advancement. He reiterated that a united and economically integrated Africa would be a formidable global force, but this vision requires stronger commitment and proactive leadership from Nigeria’s elites.
Akufo-Addo reaffirmed Ghana’s unwavering support for Nigeria, highlighting the importance of regional collaboration for West Africa’s growth. “Ghana stands as a loyal ally in pursuing regional and continental development,” he added.
His remarks come at a time when both Nigeria and Ghana face pressing political and economic challenges. The call for Nigeria’s leadership in Africa’s development underscores the significance of strong governance from the region’s key nations.
The launch of A Journey in Service attracted several dignitaries and political figures, celebrating Babangida’s extensive influence on Nigeria’s political and military landscape. Akufo-Addo’s speech served as a reminder of the profound impact Nigerian leadership can have on Africa’s broader development.
