ALICOR Hails Passage of Community Radio Act, Urges Senate to Concur

Monrovia, Liberia — The Association of Liberia Community Radio (ALICOR) has applauded the House of Representatives for passing a landmark bill aimed at strengthening the country’s community broadcasting sector.

The “Act for the Ownership, Management, Licensing, Sustainability, and Operations of Community Radio Stations in Liberia” was approved by the House this week, a move ALICOR described as “historic” and vital to improving grassroots communication and media freedom across the nation.

According to the association, the legislation establishes a clear regulatory framework intended to streamline licensing procedures, promote professionalism, safeguard the integrity of community broadcasters, and ensure the long-term sustainability of the country’s many rural radio outlets.

ALICOR noted that the House’s action demonstrates a firm commitment to advancing democratic participation and supporting community development. The organization also credited lawmakers, civil society groups, media advocates, and community stakeholders for their contributions during the drafting and advocacy process.

With the bill now before the Liberian Senate, ALICOR is urging swift concurrence to solidify the legal protections and operational guidelines needed to strengthen community radio institutions nationwide.

“In an age where accurate information and community-driven dialogue are essential, this Act will help safeguard Liberia’s democracy and support inclusive national development,” ALICOR stated, emphasizing the key role community radio plays in informing, educating, and mobilizing rural populations.

The association reaffirmed its readiness to collaborate with government agencies, development partners, and other stakeholders to ensure effective implementation of the legislation once enacted.
