BUU-YAO, Nimba County – The Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction (MDR) candidate in Nimba County District #5 by-election, Kortor Sehwongbay Kwagru, has expressed optimism and confidence in what appears to be a favorable outcome for his campaign, based on provisional, unofficial results from Tuesday’s vote.
In a Facebook post early Wednesday morning, Kwagru extended his gratitude to the people of Buu-Yao for what he described as a peaceful and orderly election process held on August 12, 2025.
“Just four hours after the polls closed, our energetic team provided updates from the field, showing us in the lead over our contenders,” Kwagru stated. “At about 7:30 this morning, we received the final records of the counts ~ the raw data from our field teams. While we now await the official pronouncement from the National Elections Commission, we can confidently say that ALL IS WELL.”
Kwagru also took time to thank his fellow candidates and urged everyone to remain committed to the peace process. “We are deeply grateful to our people for the trust and confidence you have placed in us. Once again, I wish to thank my fellow contestants and encourage everyone to remain committed to the peace process,” he said.
The by-election was triggered following a chain of political transitions in Nimba County. Voters in District #5 went to the polls to elect a new representative to replace former representative Samuel Kogar, who was elected to the Liberian Senate in early 2025. Kogar now occupies the seat left vacant by the late Senator Prince Y. Johnson, a long-time political figure in the county, who passed away in late 2024.
As residents await the official results from the National Elections Commission (NEC), Kwagru’s team remains confident of a win, bolstered by what they report as favorable tallies from across the district.
The NEC is expected to announce the official outcome of the by-election in the coming days.
