Amb. Yorlay Meets Doe-Addo to Advance Reconciliation Efforts

Liberia’s Ambassador to France, Dr. Teeko T. Yorlay, held an important meeting with Mrs. Celue Doe-Addo, the daughter of the late President Samuel K. Doe, at the Embassy of Liberia near Paris on March 11, 2025. The discussion centered on Liberia’s ongoing national reconciliation process, an initiative led by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, and focused on the importance of addressing historical grievances to foster lasting peace and unity in the country.

Ambassador Yorlay highlighted President Boakai’s unwavering commitment to national healing, particularly through initiatives designed to honor former Presidents William R. Tolbert and Samuel K. Doe, both of whom were victims of political violence. These efforts are seen as crucial in reconciling Liberia’s past and promoting unity and forgiveness among its citizens.

During the meeting, Ambassador Yorlay encouraged Mrs. Doe-Addo and her family to actively participate in the reconciliation process, emphasizing the significant role her late father played in Liberia’s history. He noted that the Doe family’s involvement could greatly contribute to the national effort to heal the wounds of the past.

Mrs. Doe-Addo shared her personal reflections on her journey, recounting her departure from Liberia at the age of seven amid the country’s violent conflict in 1990. She expressed her deep commitment to supporting reconciliation efforts, emphasizing her role in establishing a foundation dedicated to promoting unity, particularly between the historically opposed Doe and Quiwonkpa families.

In addition to discussing the broader national reconciliation goals, Mrs. Doe-Addo revealed plans for her upcoming visit to Liberia, which will be her first in 35 years. During the visit, she intends to refurbish her mother’s grave in Bomi County and engage with local communities, particularly in Nimba County, to promote peace. Ambassador Yorlay and Mrs. Doe-Addo agreed to arrange discussions with local leaders in Nimba County as part of the efforts to advance peace and reconciliation on the ground.

Ambassador Yorlay also pledged to assist Mrs. Doe-Addo by facilitating connections with prominent Liberian officials, including Senator Nya D. Twayen, Jr., and offering support for her efforts to engage with leaders in Nimba County. The meeting concluded with a shared understanding of the importance of continued dialogue and collaboration in Liberia’s journey toward sustainable peace and national unity.
