Ambassador Brown Strengthens Ties with Cuba, Seeks Support for Security Council Bid

Liberian Ambassador to UN Pays Courtesy Visit to Cuban Counterpart, Discusses Strengthening Bilateral Relations

On Thursday, April 3, 2025, Liberia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Lewis G. Brown, paid a courtesy visit to his Cuban counterpart, Ambassador Ernesto Soberon. During the meeting, Ambassador Brown expressed his appreciation for the strong and growing bilateral relations between the two nations, highlighting the historical significance of their partnership.

Ambassador Brown recalled his official visit to Cuba in 2017, where he had the honor of presenting his Letter of Credence to Vice President of Cuba, H.E. Mr. Salvador Valdes Mesa, in a ceremony held at the Revolutionary Palace in Havana. He informed Ambassador Soberon that plans were in progress for another visit to Cuba, where he would present his Letter of Credence in Havana, the city where Liberia’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations holds concurrent jurisdiction.

Ambassador Brown emphasized Liberia’s commitment to furthering its ties with Cuba, revealing that efforts are underway to establish a full-fledged diplomatic presence in Havana. He remarked, “Our relationship with Cuba is such an important one,” and reminisced about Cuba’s critical assistance during Liberia’s Ebola crisis. He recalled how a Cuban medical contingent had arrived in Liberia to aid in the fight against the epidemic, working alongside Liberian doctors in a selfless display of solidarity.

The Liberian Ambassador also commended Cuba for its contributions to Liberia’s human capital development, particularly through the provision of numerous scholarships that have supported many Liberians over the years. He reiterated Liberia’s unwavering support for the self-determination of nations and a just, rule-based international order.

Ambassador Brown used the opportunity to request Cuba’s backing for Liberia’s candidacy for a Non-Permanent Seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2026-2027 term. In response, Ambassador Soberon warmly welcomed the visit and praised Liberia’s efforts in this regard. He expressed Cuba’s support for Liberia’s bid, affirming Cuba’s commitment to strengthening the already strong fraternal ties between the two nations.

The two ambassadors concluded their meeting with a mutual pledge to continue working closely to enhance the bond between Liberia and Cuba.
