Amid Security Concerns, Voice of Liberia Confiscates Firearm from an Individual identified as Nanah

Monrovia, Liberia—The Management of Voice of Liberia has written the Justice Minister and Attorney General of Liberia, Cllr. N. Oswald Tweh, regarding what it terms an underlying threat to the safety and security of their institution and its members.

According to a communication addressed to Cllr. Tweh dated September 3, 2024, the management of Voice of Liberia, through its Chief Executive Officer Sekou Sheriff, expressed alarm over what he calls a troubling revelation.

Mr. Sheriff is seeking the immediate attention of the Justice Ministry in a situation involving a man identified as Nanah Gymfi, who was allegedly in possession of a firearm that he claimed was given to him by an official of the Executive Protection Service (EPS Officer) with unknown intent. He was apprehended by the Liberia National Police in their institution during the morning hours of September 3, 2024.

The alleged carrier of this firearm is heard in an audio conversation, which is in the possession of Verity, claiming that the firearm was given to him by his sister, who, he asserts, works with the EPS.

Sheriff emphasized that Nanah’s remarks raise alarming concerns, as he indicated that Voice of Liberia is currently “on the radar” of the government of Liberia.

Though Verity has not been able to independently verify the claim that the Voice of Liberia is “on the radar” of this alleged firearm carrier, it remains a point of concern.

“Hon. Minister, in an audio conversation in possession of this institution, Nanah claims that the firearm was provided to him by his sister, who is identified as an Executive Protection Service Officer (EPS). Additionally, Nanah’s remarks raise alarming concerns as he indicated that Voice of Liberia is currently ‘on the radar’ of the government of Liberia,” the letter highlighted.

The CEO of the radio station emphasized that this troubling revelation has led them to believe there may be an underlying threat to the safety and security of their institution and its members.

The Liberian media executive disclosed that his team is feeling insecure at the moment, given that their station has been a critical voice on several pressing national issues.

According to him, Nanah’s failure to make full disclosure about the firearm could spark a search and seizure warrant that could ultimately lead the police to search their premises, find firearms, and then arrest them on false charges.

They are urging the Justice Ministry to conduct a full-scale investigation into the circumstances surrounding Nanah’s possession of the firearm, the involvement of his sister, and any implications for their institution.

“It is imperative that we understand the context of these claims to safeguard our staff and operations, as well as to maintain public trust in our institution.”
