Monrovia, Liberia –The opposition Alternative National Congress (ANC) has sharply criticized the Unity Party–led administration, accusing it of focusing on expanding its political headquarters while Liberians grapple with rising economic hardship and deteriorating public services.
In a statement issued Tuesday, the ANC expressed “profound disappointment” over what it described as the government’s failure to address “bread-and-butter” issues, including soaring prices of basic commodities, unemployment, and declining social services. The party alleged that, instead of tackling these challenges, the government has been directing its attention and resources toward acquiring and developing Unity Party offices across the country.
“At a time when countless Liberians are struggling with rising prices, failing health services, deteriorating infrastructure, and a stagnant economy, the Unity Party administration has chosen to focus on securing political real estate rather than providing real solutions,” the ANC said. The statement described the government’s actions as “self-serving politics at the expense of the ordinary people.”
According to the ANC, the administration has not taken meaningful steps to ease economic pressure on households, support market women, or expand job opportunities for young people. The opposition also accused officials of enriching themselves through “unchecked allowances, unnecessary overseas trips, inflated contracts, and opaque financial dealings.”
The ANC further noted that essential public services continue to weaken, citing water shortages at the start of the dry season and the Liberia Electricity Corporation’s (LEC) new rationing schedule due to low power supply.
“Liberians did not vote for a government that would put party interests above national well-being,” the party said, calling on the Unity Party government to redirect its focus toward policies addressing poverty, food insecurity, joblessness, and what it described as the “collapse of public services.”
The ANC maintained that it remains committed to advocating for improved living conditions for all Liberians.
