The Alternative National Congress (ANC) has expressed profound concern and disappointment over what it sees as the Justice Minister’s misinterpretation of the Supreme Court’s opinion, which has ignited a new political controversy in Liberia.
In a press release issued on Saturday, December 14, 2024, the party strongly condemned the unlawful removal of Speaker J. Fonati Koffa, calling the act a blatant violation of Liberia’s Constitution and the established rules of the House of Representatives.
The ANC’s statement decried the hasty and illegal actions that led to the Speaker’s removal, which they believe were driven by political motives rather than legitimate constitutional grounds.
While acknowledging that the majority bloc in the House of Representatives has the right to change leadership, the ANC emphasized that such actions must strictly adhere to the rule of law. Anything less, the party argues, undermines the integrity of Liberia’s democratic institutions and governance.
“This hasty and unlawful takeover is a disheartening reflection of the current administration,” the ANC statement read. “It poses a significant threat to our investment opportunities and damages the government’s credibility. A nation cannot progress without a steadfast commitment to the rule of law.”
The ANC further criticized the current government for actions that it claims go against the promises of reform and rescue during its rise to power. The party argued that the orchestrated removal of the Speaker was not an effort to strengthen governance but rather an attempt to settle political scores.
“All well-meaning Liberians must denounce the government’s actions,” the release continued. “This reckless mission underscores the urgent need for balanced control of all three branches of government. Repeating the same mistakes will not yield different results.” The ANC called for unity among Liberians and all relevant stakeholders to stand against these unconstitutional actions and advocate for a governance system that upholds democratic principles, justice, transparency, and accountability. The party concluded its statement by urging citizens to work together toward a brighter future for Liberia—one rooted in the rule of law and democratic values.
