Anti-Koffa Bloc Demands Deputy Speaker Thomas Fallah’s Appearance at Sixth Day Sitting

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Representative Thomas P. Fallah, has been formally summoned by the Plenary of lawmakers opposing Cllr. J. Fonati Hoffa’s speakership.

The Anti-Koffa Bloc is requesting Deputy Speaker Thomas Fallah to appear at its Sixth Day Sitting on today, October 31, 2024, in the Joint Chamber of the Capitol Building.

The directive follows a recent communication from Hon. Fallah requesting additional time to consult his legal team on an undisclosed issue, citing the need to make an informed decision that adheres to the Liberian Constitution and relevant statutes.

In a letter dated October 29, 2024, and signed by Acting Chief Clerk James S. Tuobie Jr., the Plenary of the Lawmakers opposing the speakership of Koffa acknowledged receipt of Fallah’s request to consult legal team, which was submitted a day prior.

However, in its response, the Plenary which has emphasized that it had already extended due process to the Deputy Speaker and expects his presence at the forthcoming sitting.

The letter highlighted the importance of Deputy Speaker attendance to “discharge his Legislative duty,” underscoring the Plenary’s insistence in addressing the matter at hand.

Meanwhile, the exact nature of the issue requiring Deputy Speaker Thomas P. Fallah’s consultation with his legal team remains undisclosed, sparking speculation among political observers and the public.

Some view the Deputy Speaker’s request as an effort to ensure full legal compliance amid Liberia’s complex legislative environment, where legal interpretations can carry significant implications.

Others see the situation as part of broader internal tensions within the House, particularly as recent political maneuvers have placed certain representatives under scrutiny.

The Acting Chief Clerk’s letter, while affirming respect for Fallah’s concerns, made clear that the Anti-Koffa Plenary views his prompt participation as essential to their legislative process.

“With sentiments of my highest esteem,” wrote Tuobie Jr., “I remain,” emphasizing the formality and seriousness with which the House is handling the request.

It remains unclear as to whether failure to appear could result in potential disciplinary action or sanctions, an outcome that would likely reverberate through the House and among Fallah’s supporters.

The summon also raises questions about potential impact on Hon. Fallah’s political standing as to whether he supports Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa removal or not.

Given his influential position as Deputy Speaker, how he navigates this situation may affect the dynamics of the House and his rapport with his fellow lawmakers opposing Cllr. Hoffa’s speakership.

Liberians await Thursday’s session with interest, as the decision made therein could set a precedent for future interactions between House leadership and the Plenary.
