ArcelorMittal Liberia has announced plans to invest US$950,000 toward the construction of a children’s sports park in Palala, Bong County, in a project that underscores growing attention to community-focused infrastructure in central Liberia.
The total cost of the initiative is estimated at US$1.2 million, with Bong County expected to contribute US$250,000 as counterpart funding, reflecting a joint financing model between the private sector and local authorities.
In a formal communication to the Bong County Administration, ArcelorMittal Liberia confirmed its readiness to proceed, while outlining key financial and administrative conditions required before construction begins.
“ArcelorMittal Liberia is prepared to move forward with the project formalities for the construction of the Children’s Sports Park in Palala, pending the submission of updated documentation and confirmation of the county’s commitment to provide its counterpart funding,” the company stated.
The proposed development highlights a significant financial commitment by the company, with its US$950,000 contribution covering the bulk of the project cost, positioning it as one of the largest single recreational investments in Bong County in recent years.
Local county authorities say the remaining US$250,000 contribution from Bong County is critical to unlocking the project, as it demonstrates local ownership and partnership in the initiative.
The sports park is expected to include modern recreational facilities aimed at supporting youth development, physical fitness, and organized sporting activities in the region.
The project also reflects the outcome of sustained advocacy by local leaders, particularly Senator Prince Kermue Moye Sr., who had called for more equitable distribution of corporate social investments.
In a statement from the senator’s office, the initiative was described as a long-sought breakthrough for the county.
“This development is a direct response to our engagement with ArcelorMittal Liberia. Bong County deserves its fair share of development, and we welcome this commitment as a step in the right direction,” the office said.
The request for the project followed Bong County’s earlier exclusion from a September 2023 memorandum of understanding between the company and the Liberian government, which allocated US$8.5 million for projects in Nimba and Grand Bassa counties.
That agreement had sparked concerns among Bong stakeholders, who argued that the county, given its proximity and relevance to national economic activity, should also benefit from corporate-backed development projects.
With the latest commitment, ArcelorMittal Liberia appears to be recalibrating its community investment strategy, as the Palala sports park project is now being viewed as both a financial and social milestone for Bong County’s development agenda.
