Barclay Training Center, Monrovia. Today, Friday, 17 October 2025, the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) held its first retirement ceremony in post-war Liberia for six personnel.
This occasion is honorably dedicated to the recognition and selfless service, loyalty and sacrifices of our gallant men and women who have served Liberia with discipline, courage and commitment in upholding the military values and safeguarding the peace and stability of our country, Liberia.
The Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of National Defense, ensured that all retiring personnel of the Armed Forces of Liberia received gratuity and pension benefits in accordance with the AFL Gratuity and Pension Policy, which was passed into law on 14 August 2024.
As these personnel of the AFL retired, the Government of Liberia, in collaboration with the High Command of the AFL, provided pension benefits for all of the retired personnel as they transition into civilian life.
The pension is fifty or more percent of the monthly salary of the retirees, while gratuity is a lump sum amount calculated based on the number of years of service.This amount is a token given as a gratitude for their services made in defense of Liberia.
Those retired are Captain James S. Gbakoyah, Warrant Officer 2, Girley Merchant, Master Sergeant Richard S. Pah, the late Master Sergeant Jallah J. Sandy, First Sergeant Henry K. Bah and First Sergeant Robert K. Toe.
The President of the Republic of Liberia and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Liberia, His Excellency Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., graced the occasion and served as Special Guest of Honor.
The Honorable Minister of National Defense, Brigadier General Geraldine Janet George (Rtd) and the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Liberia, Major General Davidson Fayiah Forleh, also graced the occasion.
During his remarks, among other key points, the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Liberia, Major General Davidson Forleh, gave this reminder: “To those still serving, this ceremony reminds us that our oath to defend our nation does not end with the uniform —it endures for life. Let this moment inspire us to remain vigilant, professional, and committed to excellence in all we do”
