Monrovia, Liberia — Washington Weah, Regional Coordinator of the Ministry of Mines and Energy, has announced a proactive initiative aimed at enhancing small-scale mining operations in southeastern Liberia. The plan includes monthly capacity-building workshops designed to improve the technical skills of artisanal and small-scale miners, while also promoting sustainable mining practices and legal compliance.
During a recent interview with Verity News, Mr. Weah expressed his commitment to bringing a renewed focus to lawful mineral extraction in the region. “Under my watch, counties within the Southeast will not only become safe zones for mining but also showcase Liberia’s commitment to legal and responsible resource exploitation,” he stated. The initiative seeks to address the escalating issue of illegal mining, ensuring that all miners adhere to the country’s Mineral and Mining Law, with strict enforcement against non-compliance.
In addition to the workshops, Mr. Weah highlighted plans for improved oversight and collaboration with local agents overseeing various mining regions. He assured that his office would equip these agents to effectively carry out their responsibilities. “We are creating an ecosystem where every stakeholder benefits from the government down to the grassroots miner,” he noted.
The Ministry’s regional office has faced scrutiny due to recent reports of illegal mining activities in Maryland, Grand Kru, and River Gee counties. Stakeholders have advocated for stronger regulations and community engagement. The introduction of the monthly workshops and enhanced oversight could signal a significant step towards long-term reforms in Liberia’s artisanal mining sector, which is vital to the nation’s economy.
Furthermore, Mr. Weah praised the Boakai-Koung administration for fostering a supportive environment for civil servants. He encouraged Liberians to uphold and protect the peace enjoyed under the current administration, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in maintaining stability.
