Lower Margibi County, Liberia – June 25, 2025
Residents of Ben Town in Lower Margibi County staged a peaceful but resolute protest over the weekend, demanding the immediate shutdown and removal of Fengshou International Incorporated, a Chinese-owned rock crusher mining company operating in the area.
The protest, which drew dozens of affected community members, was organized in response to what residents describe as years of environmental degradation, property damage, and health risks caused by the company’s operations.
Speaking on behalf of the protesters, Reverend Kortee delivered a petition highlighting the severe impact of the mining activities on the community. He stated that the rock-crushing process has led to significant air and water pollution, with harmful chemicals contaminating local water sources.
“The noise and vibrations from the heavy machinery have caused cracks in our homes, endangering our families and disrupting our daily lives,” Rev. Kortee said. “We can no longer remain silent while our health, safety, and environment are destroyed.”
Residents also expressed concern about the lack of proper consultation and engagement by the company prior to beginning its operations in the community.
The protesters are now calling on local and national lawmakers to intervene urgently. They are seeking a full investigation into the company’s activities and demanding immediate action to halt operations until proper environmental and community impact assessments are conducted.
“We are determined to protect our homes and future,” Rev. Kortee emphasized. “This is our land, and our voices must be respected.”
As of press time, there has been no official response from Fengshou International Incorporated or local authorities regarding the residents’ petition. However, the community has vowed to continue peaceful protests until their demands are addressed.
