Liberia’s former Vice President and political leader of the National Patriotic Party (NPP), Jewel Howard-Taylor, has released a public message, strongly addressing tensions within her party and the broader political climate under the administration of President Joseph N. Boakai.
The statement, believed to be directed at members of the NPP and elements within the government, comes amid rising criticism of Howard-Taylor’s recent positions on the Boakai’s administration.
The former second highest person in the country under the leadership of ex president George Weah threatening chaos in the country if the president refuses to respect the Rule of Law.
Some NPP members have publicly questioned her stand and pledged support to the current administration.
In her message, Howard-Taylor described the current political environment as one marked by “maneuvering, suspicion, and betrayal,” while also highlighting the resilience and commitment to democratic principles she has witnessed in others.
“Friendships and professional relationships have turned into rivalries,” she noted, adding that internal strife has been fueled by personal ambition overriding national interest. She emphasized that Liberia is undergoing a significant political shift, asserting, “In due course, new partnerships will form while old alliances will fade, as individuals choose either to pursue fleeting advantages or to stand steadfastly for what is right.”
Citing Coretta Scott King, she remarked, “There comes a time when time itself is ready for change,” and concluded with a call for leaders to remain committed to the rule of law, which she described as “the bedrock of our democracy” and “where our true victory lies.”
Howard-Taylor’s message is seen as both a critique and a call to conscience as Liberia navigates a complex and evolving political landscape.
