Questions are mounting over who will lead Liberia’s electoral body into the 2029 general elections following the resignation of the Chairperson of the National Elections Commission (NEC).
At the Executive Mansion in Monrovia, Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr. formally acknowledged the resignation of NEC Chairperson Davidetta Browne Lansanah, effective March 15, 2026.
In her resignation letter, Browne Lansanah said her decision followed consultations with her family and a desire to take time off after more than 12 years of service to the Commission. She served first as Commissioner before rising to the chairmanship. She also expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve and pledged support for a smooth institutional transition.
President Boakai praised her tenure, noting that her leadership strengthened Liberia’s electoral system and contributed to the credibility and stability of democratic processes in the country.
While accepting her resignation, the President requested that she continue to oversee NEC operations through March 31, 2026, to ensure a seamless transition. He also indicated that, in line with constitutional and statutory requirements, the process to nominate a new chairperson will begin shortly.
The development has sparked public interest over who will be appointed to head the NEC, a key institution responsible for organizing and supervising elections, as Liberia prepares for its next electoral cycle in 2029.
