MONROVIA, Liberia — Joseph Boakai has assured Liberians that his government is actively engaging authorities in Guinea to address the ongoing situation along the Liberia–Guinea border.
In a national address delivered on Wednesday evening, March 18, 2026, President Boakai called for calm among citizens, particularly those living in border communities, amid growing concerns over recent tensions in the area.
The Liberian leader emphasized that his administration remains committed to maintaining peace and safeguarding the country’s territorial integrity. He disclosed that diplomatic channels have already been activated, with officials from both Liberia and Guinea engaged in discussions aimed at resolving the issue peacefully.
President Boakai also urged citizens to refrain from spreading unverified information that could escalate tensions, noting that national security agencies are closely monitoring developments along the border.
Reaffirming Liberia’s long-standing relationship with Guinea, Boakai described the neighboring country as a key partner in promoting regional peace and stability. He stressed that ongoing peace talks should not be interpreted as a sign of weakness, but rather as a demonstration of a shared commitment to unity and development between neighboring countries with strong historical ties.
Meanwhile, security presence along the border has been reinforced as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of residents.
President Boakai concluded by assuring the public that the government will continue to provide updates as discussions progress. He also revealed that, next month, the three nations involved have agreed to convene another meeting to strengthen cooperation and advance dialogue on peace and development.
