Monrovia — President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has issued a stern warning to officials of the Ministry of Commerce, stressing that the government will not tolerate poor performance from institutions responsible for regulating Liberia’s business sector.
Speaking at Cabinet meeting, the Liberian leader said the Ministry must take its responsibilities seriously, particularly in addressing the concerns of business owners across the country.
The President expressed frustration over recurring complaints from the business community, emphasizing that the Ministry plays a critical role in protecting local production and strengthening the economy.
“When Christmas comes, I hear people saying we have chicken here for you. We don’t want chicken we can make our own food,” President Boakai said, stressing the need to promote local production instead of relying heavily on imports.
He further warned that government officials who fail to perform their duties could be replaced.
“If you don’t know the importance of that Ministry, you have to know it now. Business people are complaining about that Ministry. If we know you’re not doing anything, we will remove you,” the President cautioned.
The remarks come as the government of Liberia continues to face growing pressure from entrepreneurs and traders demanding stronger regulation, improved support for local businesses, and policies that encourage domestic production.
