Monrovia, Liberia – The highly anticipated “Nonstop Capitol Lockdown” protest descended into violence on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, as protesters clashed with officers of the Liberia National Police (LNP). The demonstration, organized by the Concerned Citizens Movement for the Protection of Constitution and Rule of Law in Liberia, was led by District 9 and 10 Representatives, Frank Saah Foko and Yekeh Kulubah.
The tension escalated when demonstrators advanced toward the main entrance of the Capitol Building, which houses both the Executive Mansion and the Temple of Justice. Police barricades were breached, prompting a forceful response from law enforcement.
The ensuing clashes created chaos, leading protesters to scatter in multiple directions, with many fleeing toward Jallah’s Town belt.
During the confrontation, an LNP officer was reportedly severely beaten by protesters, and their firearm was allegedly taken. Police officials confirmed that the injured officer is receiving medical treatment at a health facility in downtown Monrovia.
While calm has now been restored in parts of the city, the violent turn of events underscores mounting tensions between the government and citizens, particularly around constitutional and governance issues.
Authorities are yet to provide additional details regarding the recovery of the firearm and any arrests made in connection with the violence. The incident has sparked concerns about public safety and the handling of mass protests going forward.
