Carter Center Hails Deceased ex-FLY President for Advancing Human Rights and Democracy

The Carter Center has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Augustine S. Tamba, former president of the Federation of Liberian Youth (FLY) and former Executive Director of the non-partisan CSO Liberia Elections Observation Network (LEON), praising his enduring contributions to human rights and democratic governance in Liberia.

In a heartfelt message, Jason Carter, Chair of the Board of Trustees of The Carter Center, conveyed condolences to the family of the late youth and CSO leader.

“My family, colleagues, and I were saddened to learn of Augustine’s passing, and we send you our deepest condolences,” Carter stated. “We are grateful for his leadership and dedication to advancing human rights and democratic principles in Liberia and beyond.”

The European Union in Liberia in an official statement said Tamba was not only a committed civil society leader but also a remarkable partner in strengthening democracy in Liberia. “During electoral periods, he worked closely with the European Union, demonstrating outstanding professionalism, integrity, and dedication to transparent, inclusive and credible elections,” the EU asserted.

The Federation of Liberian Youth (FLY) and the Liberia National Student Union (LINSU) described Augustine S. M. Tamba as a leader whose dedication to youth empowerment shaped a whole generation.

Tamba, a prominent youth advocate, was widely known for his commitment to civic engagement, youth empowerment, and democratic reforms across the country.

In a separate tribute, Liberian exiled activist Martin K. N. Kollie also mourned Tamba’s death, describing him as an exemplary servant of the people.

“We have lost a great and brilliant man. We have lost a patriot and a leader. We have lost a humble man. We have lost a serviceable man. We have lost a youth president and a gatekeeper of democracy,” Kollie wrote in an emotional message posted on Facebook.

You are loved and missed. We see you, then, as we’ve finally parted earthly ways. Our sympathy to your family,” Kollie concluded.

Tamba’s death marks a significant loss for Liberia’s civil society and youth advocacy space, with tributes pouring in from across the country and diaspora community.
