CDC Endorses July 17 Protest, Threatens to “Misbehave” if the Police “Misbehave”

The National Youth League of the opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) has officially endorsed the upcoming STAND Protest scheduled for July 17, 2025 strengthening the mood.

The announcement was made Thursday, July 10 during a public March in West Point, one of Monrovia’s most densely populated and impoverished communities.

The location of the endorsement is being viewed by political observers as a strategic choice to signal grassroots support.

Emmanuel Johnson, Chairman of the CDC Youth League, delivered a fiery address at the event, warning the Liberia National Police against interfering with the protest.

“If the police misbehave, we will misbehave” he said. “Boakai’s police, we’re ready for you. We will protect ourselves against the recklessness of the police,” Johnson declared, amid growing tensions between protest organizers and state security forces.

Johnson further justified the CDC’s support, accusing the administration of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai of fostering insecurity, misrule, and economic hardship.

“Mysterious killings, corruption, poverty, and violations of the rule of law are the order of the day under Mr. Boakai. On July 17, we will protect our democracy,” he added.

The STAND Protest, backed by multiple opposition groups and civil society organizations, is being organized in response to what critics call the Boakai administration’s failure to address key national issues ~ including alleged human rights abuses, economic decline, and lack of transparency.

Receiving the petition of support, Mulbah Morlu, STAND Chairman and lead organizer of the protest, welcomed the CDC Youth League’s endorsement. He emphasized that the planned demonstration is not aimed at destabilizing the country but at sending a strong message to the government.

“This protest is not to cause problems, but to tell the government that enough is enough,” Morlu said.

He called on other opposition parties and youth groups to join forces under the “Enough is Enough” campaign to advocate for what he described as the rescue of Liberia’s democratic values.

As of press time, the government has not issued an official statement in response to the CDC Youth League’s declaration. However, sources within the Ministry of Justice indicate that preparations are underway to maintain public order during the July 17 protest.
