The fate of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), relating to the legal battle of its headquarters in Congo Town, has finally been decided by the Supreme Court of Liberia.
After several months of legal rigmarole, the full bench of the Supreme Court has dealt a major blow to opposition political party, Congress for Democratic Change, involving the interstate Estate of Martha Stubblefield Bernard where the CDC is currently headquartered.
The Court in its judgment reaffirmed its 2016 Ruling that the property hosting the headquarters of the CDC, opposite the Lone Star Cell MTN, belongs to the Plaintiff Mr. Ebrima Varney Dempster. The plaintiff, Ebrima Varney Dempster, notified the CDC to vacate his property since 2023. In September 2024, Mr. Dempster obtained a Court order to evict the Congress for Democratic Change from his property.
Ahead of the planned eviction by State Security as ordered by the Court, the CDC filed a Bill of Information arguing that they were never summoned for the judgement that led to the eviction order, which temporarily prevented the eviction from taking place in September 2023. The latest ruling of the Supreme Court has dismissed the Bill of Information filed by lawyers representing the CDC, leaving them without any option but to vacate Mr. Dempster’s property.
With this imminent eviction of the Congress for Democratic Change, political pundits are now keen to know where would the CDC relocate or what could be its new political home.
Details and documents of the Supreme Court’s judgment and opinion are attached.
