In a surprising political twist, former Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) National Campaign Spokesman, Cllr. Kanio Bai Gbala, has hailed the recent invitation of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai by U.S. President Donald Trump as “a potentially massive win for Liberia.”
Cllr. Gbala, writing publicly, stated: “JNB’s invitation by the U.S. is a potentially massive win for Liberia. Liberia First.” The endorsement comes amid growing speculation about widening cracks within the CDC ranks, as Gbala continues to speak out against his own party.
Just recently, Gbala supported a statement that described CDC Political Leader George Weah’s treatment of the Doe family as “disrespectful and discourteous.” The public support for such sentiments ~ especially from a senior former campaign official ~ has only fueled talks of deepening internal division.
Political observers have taken note of Gbala’s increasingly critical stance, viewing it as a signal of possible infighting or ideological drift within the opposition CDC. “Is this a case of principle over party?” a political analyst in Margibi asked. “Or are we witnessing the early signs of a more serious fracture within CDC’s leadership?”
The praise for President Boakai by a prominent CDC figure also raises questions about shifting political alliances and the evolving dynamics in Liberia’s post-election political landscape.
While the CDC has yet to issue a formal response to Gbala’s statements, the silence is notable — and, to some, telling. As speculation grows, the public remains watchful: Is this the beginning of a broader political realignment, or just the expression of one man’s independent convictions?
For now, one thing is clear — Gbala’s latest comments have added a new dimension to Liberia’s political discourse, with the message echoing far beyond party lines: Liberia First.
