Multiple sources within the Borough of New Kru Town on Bushrod Island have informed this paper that the opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) has been reportedly evicted from its District #16 office over several months of unpaid rent. This development comes just days after Civil Law Court A ordered the eviction of the CDC from its headquarters in Congo Town, Monrovia.
According to insiders, the CDC’s failure to settle rent arrears for the office space has led to the landlord initiating legal proceedings, ultimately resulting in the forcible eviction of the party’s District #16 branch. The space, which serves as a crucial hub for the CDC grassroots’ political activities in New Kru Town, risks the forceful removal of the party’s assets.
The eviction at New Kru Town follows the recent Court’s ruling, reaffirming a previous decision to evict the CDC from its main headquarters located in Congo Town.
The latest judgment reinforces a 2016 Supreme Court ruling that had previously awarded ownership of the Congo Town land to the Barnards, represented by Administrator Ebrima Varney Dempster.
Political analysts and pundits have taken these twin evictions as a sign of escalating financial difficulties within the CDC, fueling speculation about the party’s weakening organizational capacity. Some observers warn that these developments could signal a sudden collapse or significant decline of the once-formidable political force.
The CDC, led by former President George Weah, remains one of Liberia’s leading opposition parties. Since losing power, the party has faced increasing internal and external pressures, ranging from leadership disputes to financial strains. The recent eviction episodes underscore the ongoing challenges the CDC faces as it attempts to maintain its political relevance and grassroots support.
Meanwhile, efforts to reach the landlords for additional comments were unsuccessful.
This newspaper is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the evictions and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
