Authorities in River Gee County, under the leadership of Superintendent Mike Swengbe, have announced the process for disbursing the remaining funds owed to the China Henan International Cooperation Group Co., Ltd. (CHICO) for the completion of the sports field located in Fish-Town’s Bassa Community.
The remaining $67,000 will be allocated soon to enhance the county’s sports facilities. The funding demonstrates the local government’s dedication to improving recreational spaces and encouraging sports participation, with the field anticipated to become a central venue for county sporting activities.
Once completed, the facility will not only host competitive sports but also offer a venue for various recreational events, benefiting residents of all ages.
In 2023, a contract was signed by the former administration, under Superintendent Philip Q. Nyenuh, with CHICO for the construction of the sports field, valued at $267,000, with a six-month completion timeline. So far, CHICO has received $200,000, leaving $67,000 remaining to finalize the project.
Although construction is still ongoing, the sports field has already hosted significant events, including the 2023/2024 National County Sports Meet, where River Gee County secured its first County Meet Trophy, as well as several third-division league matches and Inter school’s leagues.
However, the facility has encountered serious challenges, particularly during the rainy season, leading to flooding that renders it unplayable. A recent storm has also damaged the VIP section of the pitch.
During a recent third-division playoff match in Fish-Town, the wet and muddy conditions made the field difficult to navigate for players.
CHICO’s Human Resources Manager, Marcus Saylee Queeneh, said that the company is prepared to resume work on the project but requires the outstanding $67,000 payment to proceed as Superintendent Mike Swengbeh has assured that the local government intends to release these funds shortly.
Community leaders and sports enthusiasts are optimistic that the facility will soon become operational, providing a vital resource for recreation, competition, and community events.
As CHICO nears the completion of the sports field, residents are looking forward to the benefits it will bring to their county.
