Outgoing Chief Justice Sie-A-Nyene G. Yuoh officially handed over authority to her successor, His Honor Cllr. Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay.
The historic turnover marks a pivotal milestone in Liberia’s democratic journey and serves as a reaffirmation of the strength, continuity, and resilience of the nation’s judicial system.
Chief Justice Yuoh, who has served the Liberian judiciary with distinction for decades and became the second woman in the country’s history to lead the Supreme Court, stepped down with grace and reverence.
Her tenure was characterized by an unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law, safeguarding judicial independence, and advocating for reforms to strengthen access to justice.
In her farewell remarks, Chief Justice Yuoh expressed pride in the Judiciary’s resilience and urged continued efforts to preserve its integrity.
“Today, we do not simply mark an end, but a continuation of the ideals that bind us as a nation of laws,” she stated. “Let us remember that the Judiciary must remain an impartial guardian of justice, committed to serving all Liberians regardless of power or position.”
The incoming Chief Justice, Gbeisay, brings with him years of legal experience and judicial service, having previously served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court.
Known for his deep legal acumen and measured judicial temperament, Justice Gbeisay pledged to uphold the Constitution, protect judicial independence, and pursue reforms that ensure equitable access to justice.
“I assume this mantle not with pride, but with humility,” said Justice Gbeisay during his acceptance speech. “The trust placed in me by the people of Liberia and the legal community is not a privilege, but a solemn responsibility.”
Though the event was attended by members of the Judiciary, diplomatic corps, civil society, and legal professionals, the notable absence of several key political figures-including top officials from the Executive and Legislative branches-cast a subtle yet undeniable shadow over the ceremony.
Their absence, unexplained by official channels, has drawn public scrutiny and spurred speculation regarding inter-branch relations.
Nonetheless, the atmosphere remained one of dignity and unity, reflecting the Judiciary’s commitment to serving as a stabilizing pillar in Liberia’s democratic system.
