Chief Justice Youh Calls for Enhanced Security for Supreme Court Justices

Chief Justice Sie-A-Nyene Gyapay Youh has called for heightened security measures for all Supreme Court members following rising concerns over the safety of justices. The request was made on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, during the hearing of the Bill of Information filed by embattled Speaker Fonati Koffa.

In a tense moment during the hearing, Chief Justice Youh expressed her concerns about the growing risks faced by the court and insisted on additional protection. “Mister SG, I think we need additional security. Tell the Minister of Justice that we need additional protection,” she stated, underlining the increasing dangers that the justices now face.

The hearing, which focused on the political impasse at the House of Representatives, was marked by heated exchanges between the justices and lawyers representing both the Majority and Minority blocs. As discussions unfolded, Associate Justice Jamesetta Howard Wolokollie emphasized the critical need to follow constitutional and legislative procedures to prevent disorder. “Our rules are important to avoid chaos. The Constitution gives lawmakers authority to elect and remove a Speaker, but they must follow the proper procedures,” she stressed.

Chief Justice Youh sharply criticized the Majority Bloc’s defense, particularly the arguments put forward by Cllr. Varney Sherman. Cllr. Sherman defended the Majority Bloc’s removal of Speaker Koffa through a vote of no confidence, downplaying the ongoing turmoil within the House. In response, Chief Justice Youh pointed to recent incidents, including a fire at the Capitol Building and reports of violent confrontations over the Speaker’s position, as clear indicators of chaos.

“Would you not still consider it chaos if you woke up one morning and saw your house on fire?” she asked Cllr. Sherman, underscoring the disorder that has enveloped the legislature.

The Chief Justice’s request for enhanced security was further emphasized as she noted the increasing threats faced by members of the judiciary. She cited incidents such as lawmakers’ vehicles being unlawfully broken into and growing public resentment toward the judiciary, which have only exacerbated concerns about safety.

As the hearing continued, Chief Justice Youh directly addressed the Solicitor General, pressing for immediate action: “Where is the Solicitor General? From here, we will need protection for every member of the Supreme Court,” she said.

The courtroom also witnessed intense questioning from the justices, particularly Justice Yussif D. Kaba, who challenged the Majority Bloc’s actions. He asserted that while lawmakers have the authority to remove a Speaker, they must do so in accordance with the constitutionally mandated process. The justices made it clear that the Legislature cannot bypass established procedures for removing a presiding officer, as outlined in Articles 33 and 49 of the Constitution.
