Among the fruits yielded during President Boakai’s trip to China is the construction of a bridge to connect 12th Street to Somalia Drive.
The Somalia Drive (13.2 km) is one of the major trunk roads in the Monrovia metropolitan area, connecting the port and inland areas, and is also used as a community road by the surrounding neighborhoods.
Once constructed, the bridge will enhance economic and commuting activities between the two affected areas.
This aligns with the official presentation of the report by Boakai to Liberians upon his return from Indonesia and China.
The President’s report, however, emphasizes accountability for his recent travels, which is viewed as a significant step toward good governance.
Upon his arrival in Paynesville, the Liberian leader delivered a presentation outlining what China had promised for Liberia.
The President revealed a pledged grant of 200 million RMB, which is equivalent to US$28.1 million. According to the President, China also pledged a food assistance package of 30 million RMB, which, when converted, equals US$4.2 million.
Additionally, President Boakai indicated a debt waiver of 6.6 million RMB (approximately US$927K) owed by Liberia.
For the agriculture sector, President Boakai added that China promised 13 million RMB, an amount equivalent to US$1.8 million if converted for equipment.
The total package/pledge in terms of financial assistance amounts to US$35 million.
