China Hands Over 3,600 Metric Tons of Emergency Food Aid to Liberia

The Government of the People’s Republic of China has handed over 3,600 metric tons of emergency humanitarian food assistance to Liberia, reaffirming its commitment to supporting the country’s food security and social welfare.

The official handover ceremony, held in Monrovia, was attended by senior Liberian government officials, including Minister of Commerce and Industry Magdalene E. Dagoseh, Minister of State without Portfolio Hadja Mamaka Bility, Deputy Foreign Minister Cllr. Jeddi Mowbray Armah, and Deputy Minister for Administration at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry Tanue Jeke. Representatives of the Chinese Government were also present.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Chinese representative said the food assistance was a direct outcome of the 2024 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), where Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Liberian President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr. and announced the humanitarian support.

According to the envoy, the donation reflects China’s commitment to honoring agreements made with partner countries and symbolizes the goodwill of the Chinese people toward Liberia. The assistance, he said, is intended to help ease current food challenges facing the country.

The Chinese Government noted that the latest consignment is part of a long-standing history of food assistance to Liberia and stressed that food security remains a priority in China’s national and international development agenda.

As China prepares to implement its 15th Five-Year Plan, the focus will be on high-quality development and strengthened cooperation with developing countries to promote stable and sustainable food systems.

Beyond addressing immediate humanitarian needs, the donation was described as a practical demonstration of the strategic partnership between China and Liberia, highlighting shared responsibility in tackling global challenges such as food insecurity and climate change.

“Food assistance is not merely about sharing resources; it is about shared prosperity and a common future,” the Chinese official said.

China also reaffirmed its commitment to deepening cooperation with Liberia under the FOCAC framework, aligning development strategies, and expanding collaboration across key sectors.

The 3,600 metric tons of food aid are expected to provide immediate relief to vulnerable populations while contributing to Liberia’s broader efforts to strengthen national food security, as both countries continue to work toward a future free from hunger.
