BUCHANAN, Grand Bassa County — Panic and speculation swept through parts of Buchanan on Wednesday after residents near the Kumba Compound reported fuel oil seeping from the ground along the road leading to Fanti Town.
Eyewitnesses, including reports from Empire TV, said dozens of residents hurried to the scene with buckets, gallons, and other containers, scooping up the liquid as it bubbled through the soil. The incident quickly attracted a large crowd, fueling rumors of a possible crude oil discovery.
However, hours later, church officials from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints clarified that the source of the spill was not an oil find but a leaking fuel tanker kept at their Preston Street compound for operational use. The tanker, they confirmed, had developed a leak, leading to the unexpected seepage that sparked confusion across the city.
Local authorities later confirmed that no licensed fuel storage facility exists in Grand Bassa County, dismissing speculation of a hidden fuel depot. Residents admitted collecting the fuel, with some saying they planned to sell it to raise money for school fees for the upcoming academic year.
The Grand Bassa detachment of the Liberia National Police, led by Commander Williams Johnson, quickly moved in to secure the area, supported by other security agencies. Authorities issued warnings about the risks of handling the spilled fuel and said they were monitoring the site to ensure public safety.
The church has acknowledged responsibility for the spill but has not disclosed the quantity of fuel lost. Officials say no injuries have been reported, though assessments are underway to contain the leak and prevent further environmental damage.
