Tension erupted in an Economics class at the University of Liberia’s Capitol Hill campus on Wednesday after a student, only identified as Mercy, reportedly lost $200 while in class.
According to accounts from some of her classmates in Econ 314, Section 13, Mercy was seen with the money earlier during the class session. However, others argued that the money might have gone missing before she entered the classroom.
The incident brought the class to a standstill as confusion and murmuring spread among students. Campus police were immediately called in to investigate the matter.
The police conducted a thorough search of the classroom and questioned several students. Although the actual thief could not be identified, a male student who was reportedly sitting next to Mercy was briefly detained for questioning.
Despite the police’s intervention, no trace of the missing $200 was found, leaving the class frustrated and divided over what truly happened.
One student described the scene as “chaotic,” adding that “no one wanted to continue the lecture until the money issue was settled.”
As of press time, the University of Liberia authorities have not released an official statement on the incident. Investigations are said to be ongoing.
