Coast Guard Takes Control of Patrol Vessel

The Liberia Coast Guard has received a fisheries patrol vessel from the Liberian Fisheries Authority (NaFAA) as part of efforts to combat illegal activities at sea.

The Lone Star, originally donated by the Welsh Government of the United Kingdom, is expected to enhance enforcement operations and protect the country’s marine resources.

The vessel was initially provided to Liberia in 2019 to support efforts against illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

Designed with a twin Caterpillar 3408 diesel engine and advanced navigation systems, the patrol boat has been instrumental in monitoring territorial waters. Authorities credit it with reducing piracy and strengthening maritime oversight.

Speaking at the handover ceremony at Mesurado Pier on Bushrod Island, NaFAA’s Director General expressed appreciation to the Welsh Government, describing the vessel as a valuable asset in safeguarding Liberia’s waters. She emphasized the importance of continued vigilance, warning that without strict enforcement, the country’s fisheries sector could face serious depletion.

Assistant Minister for the Coast Guard Richard Kamara, representing the Minister of Defense, welcomed the transfer and underscored the need for joint efforts in maritime security. He noted that the acquisition of the Lone Star came at a critical time, as the nation works to clamp down on illegal activities threatening its coastal regions.

The United Kingdom’s Head of Mission in Monrovia, Joana Markbreter, reflected on the historic relationship between the two nations and reaffirmed her government’s commitment to supporting Liberia’s security initiatives. She stressed the importance of protecting marine resources, calling the vessel an essential tool in maintaining order at sea.
