Fish-Town, River Gee County – The construction of $650,000 Fish-Town City Hall in River Gee County has been abandoned causing disappointment and frustration among local residents.
The project was intended to create a central location for local government services and enhance civic participation, ultimately improving the administration of Fish-Town and nearby areas.
The Fish-Town City Hall project was initiated in March 2023 as part of a larger effort to upgrade infrastructure in the County.
Funded through a Presidential initiative and executed by the Liberia Agency for Community Empowerment, it was meant to become a significant landmark for the county.
Despite initial expectations, the project was abandoned due to unforeseen complications, including financial mismanagement and the electoral defeat of former President George Weah.
The sudden stop in construction has led to widespread disappointment in the county, with residents expressing their frustrations.
They have called on local officials to address the issues and pursue ways to revive the project. “We require transparency and accountability from our leaders. The residents of Fish-Town deserve a city hall that aligns with our ambitions and aids our progress,” said Patrick Weah, a representative for local youth, expressing his concerns.
In response to the situation, local authorities are in talks to explore possible paths to reinstate the project.
“We are dedicated to finding a solution,” stated River Gee County Superintendent, Mike Swengbe. “Though the setback is discouraging, we remain hopeful that, with joint efforts, we can realize our vision for a city hall.”
However, there are still numerous unfinished government projects in River Gee County, including the County Executive Guest House, the stalled 14th Judicial Circuit court construction, the Tienpo Administrative district building, and the Glarro Administrative district Commissioner Compound, among others.
