‘Contaminated With Fungi’-Workers Expose Nand Pharmacy

Monrovia, Liberia- Disturbing allegations have emerged against Nand Pharmacy, exposing grave concerns regarding the mistreatment of employees and unethical business practices.

In a dossier of videos and photos shared with this paper, former workers and whistleblowers have come forward to unveil unsanitary conditions, unsafe work environment, and severe labor exploitation, shedding light on a company accused not only of violating human rights but also of jeopardizing public health.

Allegations of Inhumane Living Conditions

Multiple former employees have shared their shocking experiences, revealing appalling living conditions at Nand Pharmacy.

Among the most alarming claims is the unsafe drinking water, which employees report as contaminated with fungi due to unsanitary storage and poor water purification practices.

Additionally, former workers have spoken about unhygienic food preparation and storage, with meals that were often spoiled, improperly stored, and prepared in unhealthy conditions.

One former employee described the meals as insufficient and unappetizing, stating, “We were promised proper vegetarian meals, but we only got potatoes and a few vegetables every day.

The food was either spoiled or prepared too late, sometimes with chapatis kept in the fridge for weeks. It was inhumane.”

Most concerning are the health risks associated with these conditions. Several workers have suffered from skin infections, diarrhea, vomiting, and fevers, which they attribute to the unsanitary living and working environment.

The lack of basic sanitation, unsafe water, and poor food quality has led to a health crisis among Nand Pharmacy’s staff.

Alleged Forced Labor and Salary Withholding

In addition to the poor living conditions, Nand Pharmacy has been accused of financial exploitation. Employees have reported being forced to work long hours with minimal rest.

Workers were reportedly required to pay a “deposit,” which withheld the first three months of their salaries, trapping them in their contracts.

Several former employees claim they were forced to pay large fees, sometimes up to INR 3 lakh, for their return flight to India upon leaving the company.

Workers sometimes allege they were sent back without receiving their due wages. One ex-employee claimed they had not been paid for six months and were compelled to leave due to unbearable conditions.

Unsafe Products and Public Health Violations

In a startling development, Nand Pharmacy is also accused of compromising public health by selling expired or near-expired products.

Whistleblowers have revealed that the pharmacy allegedly used alcohol to erase expiration dates on products, particularly “Baby Girl” pads, which were then sold in bulk.

Former employees corroborated these claims, reporting unsanitary storage conditions where expired items were kept and sold, violating safety regulations and putting customers at risk.

Nand Pharmacy’s management has denied the allegations, insisting that all products sold were within their expiration dates.

However, photos of allegedly tampered products, showing clearly altered expiration dates, have cast doubt on the company’s statements.

Legal and Diplomatic Intervention

As the allegations gain traction, calls for legal action have intensified. Several former employees, including those forced to leave Liberia under duress, have appealed to the Indian Embassy for help in addressing their mistreatment and securing their unpaid wages.

One employee wrote a letter to the embassy detailing the physical and emotional toll the working conditions had taken, demanding immediate intervention.

In response, Nand Pharmacy’s owner, Amit Kabra, categorically denied the accusations, claiming that the employees’ grievances stemmed from personal issues or misconduct, including theft of company property.

However, with mounting evidence supporting the workers’ claims, many are seeking justice, and former employees are organizing efforts to publicly expose locations where expired products are being stored and sold.

The Way Forward: Exposing the Truth

The situation at Nand Pharmacy is increasingly dire, raising serious questions about its workers’ health, safety, and rights.

While the company continues to deny the allegations, the testimonies of former employees cannot be ignored. Legal proceedings are underway, and more workers are coming forward with their stories, hoping to expose the exploitation they endured.

Calls for government intervention from Liberia and India are growing louder.

Indian embassy officials are urged to ensure the safety of their nationals in Liberia, while local authorities are being pressed to investigate claims of public health violations and labor exploitation.

As this story continues to unfold, it is clear that this case goes beyond the mistreatment of workers; it concerns corporate accountability, human dignity, and public safety.

The public and international community must demand answers and take decisive action to prevent such unethical practices from continuing.

The situation remains fluid, with more developments expected in the coming weeks. One thing is certain: the workers at Nand Pharmacy are no longer silent, and their pursuit of justice is just beginning.
